David Hunter (1935-2024)

We are saddened to report the passing of David Hunter at the age of 89.

You may remember David as regional coordinator for the South East (SE) before Keith Austin took over.

David was born in Woodford Green, Essex. After being evacuated to Suffolk during the war his career began with an apprenticeship at the Woolwich Arsenal. This was followed by pit-head engineering in North East Wales, the construction of Trawsfynedd Nuclear Power station in Gwynedd and then with BP as a pipeline engineer all over the globe.

David worked in Iran – where he met his beloved Anna – and in Egypt, Holland, Japan and Indonesia, amongst other countries. He retired from BP in 1993.

He joined the SE region as an organiser in 2007 when he organised his first event at Brooklands, a pre-war racing circuit near Weybridge. Between 2007 and 2019 he organised 35 events including further trips to Brooklands, walks in London, Christmas lunches and classical concerts in Guildford.

In 2014 he became the regional coordinator, a position he held until his retirement from the committee in 2020.

David was a man of many interests from his love of music, a passion he shared with Anna, to education, he was a school governor, to his lifelong interest in cars. The latter took him to Brooklands. He loved his time there where his tasks included being an event marshal, committee member and treasurer for the Brooklands Society which became the Brooklands Museum Trust.

He loved golf, his enthusiasm really took off in Iran and he carried on playing into his 70s.

David loved life. He was a warm caring man with a great sense of humour who will be missed by us all.
